OuterSignal already gives you a deep profile of every customer. You can now get that same research on prospects: people who gave you only an email and haven't bought yet. Each one lands on your Signal Feed's Prospects tab, so you know who they are and every message you send has a better chance of winning that first order. Upload a CSV, or have new Shopify sign-ups researched as they arrive; either one works on its own.
Before you start
For a CSV: a file with an email column, at minimum. Add phone numbers too if you have them: they give our research more to work with.
For Shopify sign-ups: your Shopify store connected under Data Sources.
Research covers people in the US and Australia.
Option 1: Research a list from a CSV
Go to Settings > Data Sources and click Import CSV.
Upload a file with an email column, plus phone numbers if you have them. For the full file format, see Can I import data via a CSV upload?
On What we found, check the number of prospects, then click Confirm and continue. Prospects are the people in your file with no order.
Match your columns to OuterSignal fields.
On Review Import, turn on Research prospects (the switch shows how many prospects are in your file), then click Start import.
Nothing is sent until you press Start import. The research choice applies to that import only, so to upload a list without research, leave the switch off.
Option 2: Research new Shopify sign-ups
Go to Settings > Data Sources and click Edit next to your Shopify store.
Under Prospect research, turn on Research new prospects.
Customers who sign up at your store without placing an order are then researched as they arrive, minutes after they join. If Klaviyo syncs your sign-ups to Shopify, those people come in this way too. Changes take effect within a few minutes, and CSV uploads keep their own choice for each upload.
To stop, turn off Research new prospects.
What you see in OuterSignal
The Prospects tab: people with no order land on the Signal Feed's Prospects tab, apart from your customers.
A persona: prospects get a persona, the same as customers.
Separate segments and playbooks: a segment you save on the Prospects tab holds prospects only, and playbooks can target the All Prospects audience, apart from your customers.
A move to Customers: a prospect who later orders moves from Prospects to Customers, with their research intact and no new charge.
FAQ
What does my file need?
An email column, at minimum. Add phone numbers too if you have them: they give our research more to work with.
What does it cost?
3 cents for each person we successfully enrich. On the free plan, an import uses your free demo allowance, and rows beyond it wait until you upgrade.
Am I charged again when a prospect buys?
No. Once they order, they move to your customers with their research intact, at no new charge.
How fast is it?
Shopify sign-ups are researched minutes after they join. Enrichment time for a CSV upload depends on its size.
Will everyone on my list be researched?
No. Research covers people in the US and Australia, and fewer prospects are found than customers with orders.
Can I use it in my welcome series?
Yes, from the second email on. The first welcome email goes out too soon after sign-up for research to finish. To build persona flows in Klaviyo, see Running a persona-based campaign or automation - Email & SMS.
Can I send prospects to Klaviyo?
Yes. A playbook on the All Prospects audience with a Klaviyo Stream action sends prospects to Klaviyo. Creating one sends every existing prospect to Klaviyo right away. To segment them there, see Building Klaviyo Segments with OuterSignal Data.
Can I use a Klaviyo list?
Klaviyo is coming soon. To use a specific Klaviyo list today, export it to a CSV and upload it. A file is a one-time snapshot. To keep researching new sign-ups, use the Shopify switch for now.
On another email platform, or not on Shopify?
Upload a CSV: export your list from any platform and upload the file. Researching new sign-ups as they arrive needs Shopify today.
