Why Don't I See a Persona for This Customer?

If you open a customer profile in your Signal Feed and don't see a persona assigned, it's because OuterSignal wasn't confident enough in the match to assign one.

OuterSignal doesn't force-fit customers into personas. Every customer has to meet an internal confidence threshold before they're assigned to one of your 6 personas — if their profile doesn't clearly belong to any group, they're left unassigned rather than placed in the wrong persona. This keeps your personas accurate and meaningful.

Is this normal?

Yes — not every customer will have a persona and that's expected. A healthy persona match rate is around 80% of your processed customers. Your match rate can be seen on the top of the persona analytics page (available on pro). That means for every 100 customers OuterSignal has processed, roughly 80 will have a persona assigned and 20 won't.

Common reasons a customer might not be assigned a persona:

  • Limited enrichment data — if OuterSignal couldn't find enough public information about this customer to build a confident profile, there's not enough signal to make a match

  • Truly atypical profile — some customers simply don't fit neatly into any of your 6 persona clusters. That's useful information in itself — it tells you this customer is an outlier relative to your core audience

When should I be concerned?

If your match rate is significantly below 80% — for example, fewer than 6 or 7 out of every 10 customers have a persona assigned — that's worth flagging. It could indicate an issue with enrichment coverage, tagging, or the personas themselves.
