A Persona is OuterSignal's way of telling you who your customers actually are — not just what they bought, but who they are as people. Instead of looking at your customer base as a single group, OuterSignal clusters your customers into distinct groups based on shared demographic characteristics, lifestyle traits, occupations, and motivations.
Each persona gets a name, a detailed profile, and a portrait — giving you a concrete, human picture of a meaningful segment of your customer base. Every set of personas is built from scratch, custom for your brand based on exactly who your customers are.
How personas are generated
OuterSignal analyzes the enriched profiles of your processed customers and identifies natural clusters — groups of customers who share meaningful demographic and lifestyle similarities. Each cluster becomes a named persona.
A few things that make OuterSignal's personas different from generic audience segmentation:
They're built from your actual customers
Personas aren't based on industry averages or market research templates. They're generated from the real enriched profiles of people who have already bought from you — which means they reflect who your brand actually attracts, not who you think it attracts.
They require a confidence threshold
OuterSignal doesn't assign a customer to a persona until it's confident they belong there. If a customer's profile doesn't clearly fit any persona, they won't be assigned one. This means your personas are precise — not every customer will have one, and that's intentional.
They require 1,000 qualifying customers
Personas become available once OuterSignal has processed at least 1,000 qualifying customers. This threshold ensures there's enough data to identify statistically meaningful clusters rather than generating personas based on too small a sample.
What's inside a persona
Each persona has several layers — from a high-level summary to real customer examples.
Name and description
Every persona has a name that captures the essence of that customer group — e.g. Clinical Practitioner or The Corporate Executive — and a narrative description that explains who they are, what they value, and how your product fits into their life. This is the brief for your marketing team.
Portrait
An AI-generated composite image that visually represents the persona based on its recurring traits. This isn't a photo of a real customer — it's a visual synthesis of the demographic and lifestyle characteristics that define the group.
Demographics
A structured breakdown of the persona's key demographic attributes:
Profession — the range of job titles and career types within this persona
Socioeconomic status — income bracket and spending orientation
Family status — household composition and life stage
Geography — where this persona is concentrated geographically
Key Motivations
The specific reasons this persona buys products like yours — what drives their decisions, what they're looking for, and what matters to them. This is one of the most actionable sections for writing persona-specific marketing copy.
Why Our Brand Appeals
An explanation of specifically why your brand resonates with this persona — not generic category motivations, but what makes your product the right fit for who they are. Useful for pitch decks, wholesale conversations, and creative briefs.
Core Persona Customers
A selection of real customers from your Signal Feed who most closely represent this persona — shown with their name, job title, and a brief description of why they exemplify the group. These are real people from your customer base, not composite examples.
Do I need to regenerate personas?
No — it's not necessary to routinely regenerate your personas. Once your personas are generated, new customers are automatically assigned to the right persona as they come in. No manual refresh is needed.
The only reason to regenerate is if your business has dramatically shifted — for example, if you've gone from selling vitamins to selling clothing. In that case your existing personas may no longer reflect your current customer base and a refresh makes sense. Just reach out to your CSM or email [email protected] and we'll take care of it.
Activating persona tagging
Once your personas are generated, you can activate persona tagging — this assigns each customer in your Signal Feed to their best-fit persona and starts flowing those tags into Klaviyo via your stream Playbook.
Persona tagging is what unlocks persona-based email campaigns, Klaviyo segmentation, Meta Lookalike Audiences, and Shopify automations. It's a one-time activation and we recommend doing it as soon as your personas are ready.
