Identifying Retail Partners and Hidden Wholesale Buyers with OuterSignal

Use your own customer base to tell you exactly which retailers your best customers already shop at, and find wholesale buyers who are already purchasing your product.

Part 1 — Identifying the right retail partners

Your persona profiles are a map of who your customers are — their demographics, lifestyle, occupation, income, and interests. That same profile tells you where they shop.

A brand whose top persona is Corporate Strategist — senior executives at large companies, high income, urban — has a very different retail footprint than a brand whose top persona is Active Retiree — outdoor-oriented, suburban, lifestyle-driven.

The retailers that index heavily for Corporate Strategists (Nordstrom, luxury department stores, premium specialty retail) are completely different from those that index for Active Retirees (REI, specialty outdoor, regional lifestyle stores).

How to use this in practice:

  1. Open your Brand Persona Reports and review your top one or two personas in detail — demographics, interests, lifestyle indicators, income bracket, occupation clusters

  2. Ask: where does this person shop for products like mine? What retailers are part of their lifestyle?

  3. Cross-reference with your own intuition and competitive research — which retailers carry brands with a similar persona profile to yours?

  4. Prioritize outreach to retailers that match your top persona's lifestyle, not just retailers that seem prestigious or large

This approach means your wholesale pitches are grounded in actual customer data — you're not guessing at fit, you're matching your proven customer profile to retailers who serve that same audience.

Part 2 — Finding wholesale buyers already in your customer base

Here's the opportunity most brands completely overlook: retail buyers and merchandisers often discover products the same way consumers do — they buy them personally before pitching them to their team.

A buyer at Whole Foods who loves your supplement. A merchandiser at Anthropologie who ordered your candle. A boutique owner who bought your skincare line for herself before reaching out about carrying it. These people are already in your order data — they just haven't been identified yet.

OuterSignal can surface them with a custom Signal Criteria.

How it works:

OuterSignal's team can add a custom Signal Criteria to your account that flags customers whose occupation matches retail buyer, merchandiser, wholesale buyer, boutique owner, or similar job titles. Once added, any customer matching those occupation signals appears with a ⭐ in your Signal Feed automatically.

To add this to your account, reach out to your CSM or email [email protected] and ask for a wholesale buyer Signal Criteria. Let us know if there are specific retailer types or job titles most relevant to your distribution goals — the more specific you are, the more targeted the signal.

What to do once you've found them

For retail partnership intelligence (Part 1) This is strategic context — use it to inform your wholesale outreach prioritization, your pitch narrative ("our customers are exactly your customer"), and your retail expansion roadmap. There's no Playbook action here, just better decision-making.

For wholesale buyers in your customer base (Part 2)

These are warm leads hiding in plain sight — people who already love your product enough to buy it personally. Treat them accordingly:

  1. Toggle on the Signal filter in your Signal Feed and look for customers matching your wholesale buyer criteria

  2. Save as a segment for an always-updated view of buyer customers

  3. Set up a Slack alert Playbook so your sales or wholesale team gets a real-time notification when a retail buyer places an order — that's your cue to reach out personally

  4. Reach out while the product is fresh — a personal email acknowledging they're already a customer, asking if they'd be open to a conversation about carrying the line, lands very differently than a cold pitch

The outreach almost writes itself: "I noticed you recently ordered [product] — we'd love to know what you thought, and if you'd ever be interested in carrying it at [retailer], we'd love to chat."

Combining both approaches

The most effective wholesale strategy uses both signals together:

  • Persona data tells you which retailers to target

  • Wholesale buyer signals tell you which buyers at those retailers are already warm

If your top persona points to specialty outdoor retail and your Signal Feed surfaces a buyer at REI who just placed an order — that's not a cold outreach, that's a conversation that's already halfway started.
